Globally Unique Identifiers in DICOM

  • “UI” is a UID type that holds a globally Unique Identifier value
  • The UID value derives internationally from ISO and then ISO member and then national Standards group (for US ANSI) and then to the device manufacturer, department, network address, event date and time, instances, etc.  There is a specific encoding requirement
  • There should never be two UID coding strings that are equivalent in the world
